Biography

Tim Young was a relief pitcher who played for the United States’ gold medal winning baseball team at the 2000 Sydney Olympics. He played college baseball at the University of Alabama and was drafted by the Montreal Expos in the 19th round of the 1996 Major League Baseball (MLB) Draft.

Young came up to the majors for a cup of coffee in September 1998 with the Expos, pitching in 10 games in relief, but he was sent back to the minors in 1999 and was traded to the Boston Red Sox. In 2000 he was playing for the Red Sox Triple-A team, the Pawtucket Red Sox, which allowed him to play at the Olympics. After the Olympics he pitched eight games for the BoSox and that was the end of his Major League career, which saw him play 18 games, posting a 6.23 ERA with 13 strikeouts in 13 innings pitched with no decisions or saves.

Young played in the minor leagues through 2004, playing with 12 different teams in the minors, and ending his professional career in the US with the Buffalo Bisons, a Triple-A team in the International League. Young also played a few games in the 2001 season with the Hiroshima Carp of the Japan Professional Central League and eight games in 2004 with the Sinon Bulls of the Chinese (Taiwan) Professional Baseball League, helping them win the Taiwan Series that year.
