Biography

Syed Shahid Ali earned a master’s degree in economics from Government College at the University of the Punjab (Pakistan) in 1969. He later worked on a United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) at the Institute of Economics and Statistics at Oxford University. While at Oxford he captained the university polo team and represented Pakistan in polo against teams from Britain, the USA, Iran, Jordan, Brazil, Nigeria, India, Australia, South Africa, and Brunei. He later earned graduate degrees from Oxford in development economics (1972) and from Manchester University in management science (1973).

In 1995, Ali went into business serving as CEO of the Treet Group, and also served on the boards of multiple corporations and organizations. In sports administration he served as President of the Pakistan Wrestling Federation from 1989-93 and was vice-president and patron of the South Asia Wrestling Federation.

In 1996 Syed Shahid Ali was named to the International Olympic Committee (IOC), succeeding his father, Syed Wajid Ali. Syed Shahid Ali served on multiple commissions within the IOC, including Olympic Solidarity (1997-2001), Coordination for the 1st Summer Youth Olympic Games Singapore 2010 (2008-11), Finance (2002-14), Sport for All (2005-15), Philately, Numismatic and Memorabilia (2014-15), and Sport and Active Society (2015-21), and he was named to the Olympic Education Commission in 2022. He has been a board member of the International Olympic Truce Foundation since 2006.
