Biography

Sir Lance Cross studied at Canterbury College after which he became a physical education teacher in Fiji. He played basketball for New Zealand, coached the national team, and later became President of the national basketball federation. In 1952 he became a sports broadcaster with the New Zealand Broadcasting Corp., staying in that role until 1978. Cross was co-opted onto the IOC in 1969, and served on the Executive Board from 1978-82. On the retirement of Lord Killanin as IOC President, Cross initially stood for the Presidency, but withdrew his name the day before the election of Juan Antonio Samaranch. Cross was elected President of the New Zealand Olympic Committee in 1981. He retired as an IOC Member in 1987 and became an Honorary Member.
