Biography

Iván Dibós studied business administration at the University of Detroit in the United States, obtaining further degrees at the Lima Higher Institute of Business Administration and the Centre of Military Studies in Peru. He later became a director of several companies and a board member of multiple industrial and commercial firms. He served as deputy mayor of Lima from 1978-80 and 1990-92, and was then mayor of Lima from 1993-95.

Dibós practised several sports, but was especially known for his rowing. He was a Peruvian Champion several times between 1957-73, and also won national titles in the United States (1958 quadruple sculls) and Canada when studying in the US. He competed at both the South American Games and Pan-American Games, and later became a masters’ champion in Argentina, Peru, and the USA.

In sports administration, Dibós was President of the Peruvian Cycling Federation from 1967-68, and then served as secretary-general of the Peruvian Rowing Federation from 1971-74, and was their treasurer from 1980-81. He served as a council member (1998-2009), and then Vice-President (2009-14) of the World Taekwondo Federation (WTF).

Dibós was co-opted onto the IOC in 1982, and has served on several IOC Commissions, as follows: Television (1983-84); Study and Evaluation for the Preparation of the Olympic Games (1984-86); Culture and Olympic Education (appointed 1988); Women and Sport (appointed 2005); and Radio and Television (appointed 2005). For his services to sport, Dibós was made an Officer of the Légion d’Honneur in France in 2011. He stepped down as a full IOC Member in 2019 but was named an Honorary IOC Member.
