Biography

English-born, Sydney Dowsett emigrated to South Africa in 1902 where he worked as an architectural draftsman. He later became Assistant City Engineer of Johannesburg, retiring in 1946 after serving for 43 years. Dowsett was a top water polo player in South Africa and served as a President of the South African Swimming Union. He was named to the IOC in September 1946 serving until his death in 1951.
