Biography

Georges Duperron was from a French family that settled in Russia. He graduated from the University of St. Petersburg and became a sports journalist, becoming Editor-in-Chief of the weekly magazine The Sport in 1902. However, he shortly gave up journalism for a position at the St. Petersburg Library. However, he noticed that there were few sports books so he set to solve that problem, writing over 30 books on various sports. Duperron introduced basketball and hockey to Russia and was President of the Russian Football Association in 1915. He was the first Secretary-General of the Russian Olympic Committee, founded in 1911. Duperron became an IOC Member in July 1913, but served only two years because of the political situation in Russia.
