Biography

José Joaquim Fernandes was a medical doctor who was Vice-President of the Inter-Allied Committee for War Victims. He was President of the Portuguese Olympic Committee from 1920-57. He favored gymnastics, weightlifting and wrestling and served as President of the Portuguese Gymnastics Club. Fernandes served for 10 years on the IOC, from 1946-56, resigning in 1956, after which he was named an Honorary Member.
