Biography

John Garland was the son of William May Garland, a pioneer real estate developer in the Los Angeles area, and an IOC member from 1922-48. John Garland succeeded his father on the IOC after the elder’s death. Garland studied at the Hotchkiss School, but after graduating from Yale in 1925, John also followed his father in his real estate firm of W. M. Garland & Co, succeeding his father as President of the company in 1948. He also would later serve as director of the Union Bank from 1958-68. As his father had helped bring the 1932 Olympic Games to Los Angeles, John Garland was a driving force convincing the IOC to award the 1960 Winter Olympics to Squaw Valley, previously more a concept than an actual ski resort. Garland was known for his civic, charitable, and philanthropic contributions in Los Angeles. For his work in international sport, he was decorated by the governments of Finland, Argentina, and Austria. He served for 20 years on the IOC, from 1948 to 1968.
