Biography

Born Raden Mas Dorodjatun in 1912, he became the 9th Sultan of Yogyakarta in 1940, a position he held until his death in 1988, and after which he was known as Sri Sultan Hamengkubuwono IX. In 1945 he was made the first Governor of Yogyakarta during the reign of Suharto, after the declaration of Indonesian independence. He served as Minister of Defense for Indonesia in 1949, Deputy Prime Minister in 1950-51, Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs in 1966-67, and from 1973-78 he was Vice-President of Indonesia.

Sultan Hamengkubuwono helped found the Indonesian Olympic Committee in 1951 and served as its first President. He was also President of the National Sports Council of Indonesia in 1966 and President of the Asian Games Federation from 1959-62. Sultan Hamengkubuwono was made a member of the IOC in October 1968 and resigned his post in July 1976. After his death, he was named a “National Hero of Indonesia.”
