Biography

Eduardo Hay received a medical degree from the School of Medicine in Lyon, France, and later became a renowned obstetrician and gynecologist. He was professor of OB-GYN at the National University of Mexico City, and directed both the American British Cowdray Hospital and the Amparo Maternity Hospital in Mexico City. He was one of the founding members of the Mexican Gynecology and Obstetrics Society, and was a member of the International Olympic Medicine Society, the International Association of Olympic Medical Officers, and the Pan American Sports Medicine Confederation.

Hay was a top fencer as a youth, winning Mexican and Central American championships with the épée. In administration he was President of the Mexican Fencing Federation from 1950-55, and the Pan American Fencing Federation from 1955-57. He was a Vice-President of the Mexican Olympic Committee and was Director of the Mexican Olympic Sports Center from 1965-72. Hay became an IOC Member in October 1974 and stayed a Member until his resignation in December 1990, after which he was named an Honorary Member. He was a member of the IOC Medical Commission from 1967-93, and was Vice-Chairman of that commission from 1980-93. His medical knowledge and advice was particularly useful as the IOC planned for the 1968 Olympics in the high-altitutde of Mexico City.
