Biography

HRH Prince Imran was a squash champion in Malaysia and a member of their national team from 1973-76. He also played cricket, rugby, hockey, and tennis at university. Prince Imran studied and received a law degree from the University of Nottingham in Great Britain and became a barrister-at-law at Gray’s Inn.

Prince Imran entered the business world in Malaysia serving as group company secretary of the National Corporation of Malaysia from 1971-72, and managing director of Haw Par Malaysia from 1973-1976, and then became group chairman of the Petra Group in 2007-08, and has since served as executive chair of Syarikat Pesaka Antah. In sports administration, Prince Imran has served multiple roles. He has been President of the Olympic Council of Malaysia (1998-), President of the Commonwealth Games Federation, President (2000-2001) and then Honorary Life President (2001-) of the Southeast Asian Games Federation, President (1989-1996) then Emeritus President (1996-2002) of the World Squash Federation (WSF), Vice-President of the Asian Cricket Council (1993-2004), President of the Malaysian Cricket Association (1991-2011), a member of the International Council of Arbitration for Sport (ICAS) (2002-2014), Director of the Organising Committee of the 1998 Commonwealth Games hosted in Kuala Lumpur, and President of Taekwondo Malaysia (WTF) (2010-2014).

In 2006 Prince Imran was co-opted onto the International Olympic Committee (IOC) as President of the Olympic Council of Malaysia. He served on the IOC through 2018, after which he was made an Honorary Member. During his time on the IOC Prince Imran served on the following commissions: Sport & Law (2002-14), Sport for All (2006-15), and Sport and Active Society (2015-20).

In his roles in sports and as a member of Malaysian royalty Prince Imran has received multiple honors and awards, among which are honorary doctorates at Newport University (USA) (2004) and the United States Sports Academy (2009), an honorary doctor of laws from the University of Nottingham (2011) and an honorary doctorate from the University of Glasgow in 2014. He was also made a member of the Most Esteemed Order of the Royal Family of YAM Tuan Raden, and the Most Esteemed Order of the Crown of Malaysia, the Panglima Setia Mahkota (the Commander), with the title Tan Sri (1992), and the Most Honourable Order of Negeri Sembilan, the Darjah Seri Paduka Negeri Sembilan (Knight Grand Commander), which carries the title of Dato Seri Utama (1999).
