Biography

A native Scotsman, David Kinley emigrated to the United States in 1872 with his father, and later entered Yale College in 1880, graduating in 1884. He spent several years teaching before earning a PhD in economics at the University of Wisconsin in 1893. He then joined the faculty at the University of Illinois where he became a professor of economics, serving on the faculty there for 37 years, dean of the graduate school, and eventually school president from 1920-30. He served on numerous boards and commissions, among them Chairman of the Board of the First National Bank of Champaign, Illinois; trustee of the Institute of Economics (1923-25); US delegate to the fourth international conference of American states at Buenos Aires (1910); minister plenipotentiary and envoy from the United States to the centennial of Chilean Independence in 1910; and a delegate to the 2nd Pan-American Scientific Congress at Washington in 1915. In his various fields, he was an author and editor of several important works. Kinley served only briefly on the IOC, from 1925-27, resigning because of his various other commitments, and never actually attended an IOC Session.
