Biography

Rita Subowa studied at Kristen Indonesia University, earning a masters degree in economics in 1970. She played on the university basketball team but later turned her attention to volleyball. She became an official of the National Volleyball Federation of Indonesia (PBVSI) and in 1988 was named a vice-president. She was named President of PBVSI in 2000 and held that position until 2005.

Subowo later became deputy chair of the National Sports Committee of Indonesia (KONI), and eventually served as chair of KONI and President of Komite Olimpiade Indonesia (KOI) from 2007-15. In 2002 Subowo was elected executive vice-president of the Fédération Internationale de Volleyball (FIVB).

In her role as President of KOI, Subowo was elected a member of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in 2007, and served on the IOC through 2015, when she stepped down as President. During that time she served on the Sport and Environment, Sport for All, and the Women and Sports Commissions.

Subowo was a member of the Olympic Council of Asia’s executive board beginning in 2006. In 2020 she became the first woman President of the Asian Volleyball Confederation, serving through 2023.
