Poul Winge was part of the Danish handball team that revolutionised the sport in the country during the 1950s. In addition to the national team, Winge represented VRI before moving to Aarhus YMCA in 1958. He played in 25 international matches for Denmark during his career, including being selected to represent his country at the Olympics. At the 1952 Helsinki Olympics handball was a demonstration sport with Sweden beating Denmark 19–11 in a one-off match. Despite handball being a popular sport in Europe it did not return to the Olympic programme until the 1972 München Games.
