Biography

Herman Goldberg played for the USA at the 1936 Olympic demonstration baseball tournament. Goldberg attended Brooklyn College, graduating in 1935. After the Olympics he played minor league and semi-pro baseball from 1937-39. He later earned a masters’ degree from Columbia Teachers College in 1944, and then earned a law degree from the University of Rochester in 1965. He was a Fulbright Professor at the University of Bologna from 1960-61, and was a consultant to the ministry of education in Italy and Israel in 1960-61.

Goldberg started his career as a teacher in New York City public schools, but later moved to Rochester, where he became the superintendent of school in 1963-71. He then entered government service, working as an associate commissioner of the Department of Health, Education and Welfare from 1971-82. He also had other government posts and then from 1983-87 he was senior executive administrator with the American Association of School Administrators.

In 1985 Goldberg was given a Distinguished Service Award by Brooklyn College. In 1995 the school gave him its 60th year Distinguished Service Alumni Award.
