Biography

Herbert Klepp was one of the top Austrian kayaking athletes of the 1940s. A native of Wien (Vienna), he first won a youth championship title in 1940. The winner of eight national titles in a six-year period between 1945 and 1951, Klepp also set a long distance world record in 1947. Selected as a member of the Austrian Olympic delegation to the London 1948 Olympic Games, Klepp competed in the K2 1,000 metre and K1 10,000 metre events. In that same year, he finished second in the Flatwater World Championships in the K4 1000 m (with Paul Felinger, Walter Piemann, and Alfred Umgeher).

After winning an national championship in the K4 1000 metres in 1950, Klepp also achieved two third place finishes at the 1950 World Championships held in København (Copenhagen), in the K4 1000 m (with Paul Felinger and the non-Olympians Walter Frühwirt and Hans Ortner) and K1 4×500 m (with Max Raub, Herbert Wiedermann, and the non-Olympian Günther Rührnschopf). He was also the owner and operator a sporting goods store in Vienna.
