Biography

Austrian architect Erwin Ilz was given an Honorable Mention at the 1936 Olympic Games together with his compatriot Hans Pfann for their work Refinement of the Danube Island near Langenzersdorf. Langenzersdorf marks the northern end of the Vienna Danube Island, which has been artificially landscaped since the 1970s. There used to be a series of islands between the branches of the river along the section of the Danube between this place and Klosterneuburg. Here, they planned a water sports facility (Ilz, 1936) and a sports complex with a sports settlement (Pfann, 1932), but the plan was not realized.

Ilz studied at the Technical High School in Wien (Vienna). His career started with town planning projects mainly in Wien and from 1925-36 he often worked with Pfann. At the Technical High School, he later was appointed professor of urban planning, and served as dean of his faculty from 1938-45. During this time, he designed urban plannings for Wien, Praha and Znojmo. In 1934 Ilz became an internal architect at the Künstlerhaus Wien, where the National Socialists began to restructure the institution in the Nazi mold. Ilz was thus discarded from the list of institutional members in 1945, but due to a change in the legal situation, only three years later he was reinstated as a member by common consent. He eventually worked as a town planner in Salzburg, mostly planning buildings in a conservative style. He died on his 63rd birthday.
