Louis De Marquevic, as he was listed in the art catalogue, was a painter and decorator of Polish-Ukrainian descent. He was best-known as a painter of beautiful women in the 1930s and 1940s. His preferred motifs were elegant ladies, artists and famous people, especially nudes and portraits. De Marquevic also painted big decorative panels and seascapes from Brittany. In 1948 he submitted “Le boxeur” in oil on panel showing the French boxer Francis Rutz (1916-1946). Rutz fought as a professional boxer from 1935-1944 and became French heavyweight champion winning 26 of 34 fights. As a member of a fascist gang that collaborated with the German occupiers, he was sentenced to death and executed after the liberation.
