Biography

Irish painter Leo Whelan was especially known for his brilliant portraits of Irish public life in the first half of the 20th century. His greatest successes concerned the portrayal of famous people who built up modern Ireland, which was emerging during this time. His subjects included a wide range of eminent public figures from the political, academic, legal and celebrity worlds. He also portrayed many volunteers of the Irish struggle for independence. Whelan studied in Dublin at the Metropolitan School of Art.
