Biography

Ásgeir Bjarnþórsson started drawing at an early age and studied in Reykjavík, København and München. He is still regarded among the best-known Icelandic painters. Bjarnþórsson painted mostly portraits, landscapes and still lifes, and combined language, song and poetry in his paintings. In London in 1948, he submitted the painting At the Pool (Við hylinn). A second almost identical version dated 1947 (165 x 190 cm) to the one in the art exhibition catalog can now be seen in the Museum of Reykjanes. At the 1952 art exhibition he presented two works, the water color Autumnal Lava and the oil painting At the Salmon River.
