Biography

Swiss Jean-Louis Clerc was a painter, illustrator, cartoonist, journalist and writer. In 1925-27 he attended the École des Beaux-Arts in Genève and in 1928-29 continued his studies at the Tekniska och Högre Konstindustriella Skola in Stockholm. Later, he worked in various European countries, from 1935 in Zürich and, after 1944, in Lausanne, mainly for various periodicals. He was also one of the most prolific designers of the fashion label Hermès from the 1950s, producing many scarfs for the company. Clerc was influenced by the work of French artist Raoul Dufy (1877-1953), who painted numerous equestrian water color and oil pieces.

Polo Player dated 1935 is probably one of the two submitted drawings, both titled Polo. Sized 21 x 28 cm it was executed with ink and watercolors. It can be assumed that the other entries were comparable drawings. Clerc later resumed the topics of polo and horse racing for Hermès.
