Máté Szákall spent much of his athletic career in the shadow of Mór Kóczán and later of Imre Mudin. He placed second in javelin throw at the Hungarian Championships three times (1912, 1914, 1917). Szákall won his only title in 1915, when both were absent. He represented the local club, Mosonmagyaróvári Gazdászok Atlétikai Clubja (MOGAAC), until 1912, when he was entered for the javelin throw at the Stockholm Olympics, although he did not start. In the same year, Szakáll set a national record of 54 metres. For the rest of his career, he was a member of MTK from Budapest.
