Mario Vitali was a successful Italian race walker from Milano although he never won an Italian title standing in the shadow of Nando Altimani. He won three consecutive silvers in the 10,000 m race walk at Italian championships (1910-12). In 1913, he took another bronze in the 40 km event. One of his greatest achievements was the victory in 1912 in a traditional 100 km race walk, organized annually by the newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport. His last documented victory came in 1914 in a 17 km race in Torino. Vitali was entered for the 10,000 m race walk at the 1912 Stockholm Olympics but did not compete.
