Biography

Matias de Carvalho was a Portuguese long-distance runner. Representing Sporting CP, he placed second in the Portuguese Marathon Championships in 1911 and 1912, behind Francisco Lázaro on both occasions. He was also part of the club’s team that, in 1912, won the National Cross-Country Championship, ranking third in that competition.

Matias de Carvalho was part of the team selected to represent Portugal at the 1912 Stockholm Olympics. The Portuguese delegation struggled with the lack of financial means to travel to Stockholm, as the Portuguese Olympic Committee did not grant any subsidy, and Matias de Carvalho became part of the group of four athletes excluded from participating in the Games due to lack of funds.
