Biography

Charles Burton was a light-heavyweight freestyle wrestler who finished fifth at the 2000 Sydney Olympics. He wrestled in college at Boise State University but later finished his degree at Indiana University. As a senior at Boise State he placed third at the NCAA Championships.

Burton made the US National Team in 1999. His biggest palmarès were a silver medal at the 2000 Pan American Championships, with a bronze in that tournament in 1997. He won the 2000 Tahkiti Cup in Tehran, Iran; the 2001 Kyiv Open in Ukraine; the 2001 Trophe Milone in Roma; silver at the 2000 Don Kolov International tournament in Sofia, Bulgaria; and a World Cup bronze in 2003. Burton was honored as the 2004 USA Wrestling/FILA Junior/University Man of the Year. Burton began coaching while he was still competing, as a volunteer assistant at Boise State. He then was an assistant coach at Indiana University, but later became head coach at the University of Nebraska.
