Biography

Sándor Mazány started skiing in the second half of the 1930s, competing in cross-country, ski-jumping, and alpine competitions, which was customary at the time. In 1943 he finished first in cross-country skiing both individually and as a team in the youth championship. Until the end of the war he competed in the colors of the Budapesti Levente Egylet. After 1945 he was a competitor of Goldberger SE, Bástya, Dózsa Kőbányai and Dózsa Bp-i. At that time he mainly competed in the alpine disciplines.

Between 1947 and 1956 Mazány was the member the Hungarian national team. He took part at the 1948 St. Moritz Olympics where he finished 49th among 102 competitors in the downhill. In the same year he finished first in the national championship in downhill, slalom, and the alpine combined. During his career he won six individual championships and was a member of four championship teams. In 1956 he left Hungary and settled in New Zealand.
