Biography

Dino Pompanin was born in Cortina d’Ampezzo in 1930 and dedicated his whole life to skiing. At 25 he competed in the Olympics in his hometown, finishing 24th in the giant slalom. At the Italian nationals, he was third in giant slalom in 1951 and second in 1957.

Pompanin later worked with the sports group Fiamme Gialle in Predazzo, in the Val di Fiemme, but also played leading roles in the sports and tourism organization of Piancavallo. A ski instructor and national coach, he was one of the mainstays of the ski school at the Pordenone resort, from its foundation to the 1990s. In his long career as a technician, he was coach of the Carnic-Julian committee between the 1960s and 1970s. His many years in Piancavallo were inextricably linked to the golden age of the resort, which hosted several World Cup competitions.
