Józef Stefaniak had a long ice hockey career both at a domestic and international level. Stefaniak played in 386 matches in the Polish league, scoring 298 goals and twice finishing as the league’s top scorer (1966, 1969). He started his career in Poland with Boruta Zgierz in 1960, with him also playing for Toruński KH and ŁKS Łódź. Towards the end of his career in the late 1970s he played three seasons with the Austrian side EHC Lustenau.
Between 1964 and 1976 Stefaniak played in 103 matches for the Polish national team and scored 34 goals. His prolific international career saw him appear at seven editions of the World Championships and compete at the 1964 Innsbruck Olympics. At the Games he played in eight matches and scored five goals.
