Biography

Flatwater canoeist Bärbel Köster won the bronze medal at the 1976 Montréal Olympics, partnering Carola Zirzow in the K-2 500. Köster also won four gold medals at World Championships, winning the K-2 and K-4 over 500 metres in both 1974 and 1975. She won East German national titles in the K-4 500 in 1975-76. By profession, Köster trained as a commercial clerk, and later worked in a rehabilitation center in Neubrandenburg.
