Biography

Harald Gimpel was an East German whitewater canoeist who won the bronze medal in the K-1 at the 1972 München Olympics in a surprisingly well-executed second run. The canoe slalom events were held on the canoe slalom course of Augsburg for the first time at Olympic Games (and for the last time until 1992). He won two bronze medals at the 1975 World Championships in Skopje in the individual K-1 and with the K-1 team. Domestically, he claimed East German K-1 team national titles in 1971-74. Individually, he came in second in 1975 and 1978, and third in 1971, 1972, 1974, 1976 and 1977. He was later inducted into the German Canoe Slalom Hall of Fame.
