Toyfl learned to skate as a 12-year-old, and developed into one of the top skaters in Austria. In 1962, 1964, and 1966, he placed second in the Austrian Championships, each time behind Hermann Strutz. In 1962, this earned him a spot at the European Allround Championships, where he finished in the back of the field in 31st place. Two years later, he qualified for the Olympics on home soil in Innsbruck, racing the 500 m (36th) and 1,500 m (48th). His other main international appearance was in a country match in the 1962/3 season, against Hungary, Poland and East Germany.
Toyfl studied law at Vienna and completed his military service as a soldier athlete. In his professional career, he mostly worked for banks, ending his career as a manager at the Wiesenthal Bank. He continued to skate most of his life, appearing occasionally in competitions through the 1980s. Only when in his 80s did his health force him to stop his weekly skating session at the WEV.
