Description

Before being incorporated as part of Canada in 1949, Newfoundland enjoyed a similar autonomous status as Canada, and as such was entitled to send athletes to the Olympic Games. An NOC was even established in the 1920s, but due to financial troubles, a Newfoundland delegation to the Olympics never materialized. However, in 1904, one Newfoundland citizen, though living in Boston, Bob Fowler, competed in the Olympic marathon. Fowler later became a US citizen, and was part of the official American delegation for the 1906 Olympics, but could still be considered this former nation’s representative in 1904. Other Newfoundlanders have usually represented Canada, even before the union of 1949.
