Olympic Winter Games

The Olympic Winter Games are held every four years. Originally they were held in the same year as the Games of the Olympiad. Currently, they are contested every four years, but during the second calendar year following the beginning of the Olympiad. This ruling was made at the 91st IOC Session in 1986 in Lausanne, by a vote of 78-2, specifically to take advantage of the better use of advertising and television dollars to fund the Olympic Movement.
