Ice Hockey at the 1920 Summer Olympics

Dates 23 – 29 April 1920
Medal Events 1

Ice hockey was contested at the 1920 Summer Olympics in Antwerpen, although much earlier in the year, in April, when ice could be maintained on an indoor rink at Le Palais de Glace d’Anvers, which was located at the Rue de la Santé, near the Botanic Gardens in Antwerp. Seven teams competed in a single-elimination tournament, with Canada winning the gold medal in a 12-1 rout over Sweden. They had defeated Czechoslovakia 15-0 in the first round, but had a close match in the semi-final against the United States, winning 2-0. The Canadian team was a club team, the Winnipeg Falcons, with seven of the eight players of Icelandic origin, and the nickname Falcons chosen because the falcon is a symbol of Iceland, with the Order of the Falcon a high honor in Iceland, presented by the Icelandic President to its recipients. Ice hockey had actually been on the program for the 1916 Olympics in Berlin, which were not held because of World War II. It would become a standard Winter Olympic sport when that edition of the Olympics began in 1924 at Chamonix.
