Firefighting exhibitions were given at the 1900 Exposition Universelle, alongside the 1900 Olympic Games.
The International Sport Federation of Firefighters and Rescuers (ISFFR) was founded in 2001 by the decision of the 1st International Conference of Leaders Fire and Rescue Services. The first World Championship in fire and rescue sport would be held the following year, in Moskva, Russia. Women teams first joined the programme of the World Championship in its 10th edition, which was staged in Almaty, Kazakhstan.
As of January 2026, the federation has 32 member countries. The organization’s office is located in Moskva, and its current president is Russia’s Aleksandr Chupriyan.
