This event was scheduled to be held but was cancelled because of the horrid weather, which included high winds, almost freezing rain, and very rough seas. Because of the weather and the dangerous seas, the rowing events were re-scheduled to the afternoon, but as the weather was no better in the afternoon, and the rowing events were the last scheduled events of the 1896 Olympics, they were cancelled.
The event was to be rowed over 2 nautical miles (3,704 metres). Gigs were long, narrow boats, often called pilot gigs, originally designed to carry pilots out to incoming ships in rough, coastal waters. They were usually six-oared boats. There were seven known entrants, boats representing Hydra (GRE), Spetzai (GRE), Psara (GRE), Hellas (GRE), a Greek panzerfregatte (GRE), Devastation (FRA), and San Francisco (USA).
