This event was scheduled to be held but was cancelled because of the horrid weather, which included high winds, almost freezing rain, and very rough seas. Because of the weather and the dangerous seas, the rowing events were re-scheduled to the afternoon, but as the weather was no better in the afternoon, and the rowing events were the last scheduled events of the 1896 Olympics, they were cancelled.
The event was to be rowed over 2 nautical miles (3,704 metres). The event was to be rowed in naval skiffs, a traditional wooden rowing boat, in this case with 10-14 oarsmen. There were five known entrants, boats representing Hydra (GRE), Spetzai (GRE), Psara (GRE), Devastation (FRA), and San Francisco (USA).
