There were 8,050 competitors overall in the 29 different events. There were seven events for “Group 1” – handsfree, apparatus, boxing, canne (a French form of stick combat), fencing, pyramids without apparatus, and pyramids with apparatus. The canne event had 42 societies classified with the event won by Fraternité de Bordeaux with 154 points out of a possible 160. Canne, better known as canne de combat, is a French form of stick combat which also featured as a demonstration sport at the 1924 Olympics in Paris. The canne is a light, tapered stick made of chestnut, with the combatants wearing protective clothing and masks.
