At the 1912 Olympics in Stockholm, a demonstration of three sports (or games) from the Swedish island of Gotland was given. The three events were pärkspel (a ball game in which the ball is hit with bare hands), stångstörtning (essentially the Swedish form of the Scottish caber toss), and varpastning (a throwing game somewhat similar to horseshoe throwing).
Later that year, on 20 October 1912, the Föreningen Gotländsk Idrott (FGI) was founded, with the mission of promoting the Gotland sports games. The federation still exists today as the Föreningen Gutnisk Idrott, and keeps organizing the Stångaspelen (or Stånga Games) since 1924.
