Description

Sumō, the Japanese traditional form of wrestling, was contested as a demonstration sport at the 1964 Olympic Games in Tokyo, as part of the budō demonstration, along with kendō (fencing) and kyudō (archery). Sumō wrestling is governed internationally by the International Sumo Federation (IFS), which was founded in 1946, and is recognized by the International Olympic Committee (IOC). As of 2022, the IFS has 85 affiliated member nations, including the USA state of Hawai’i.
