Biography

Between 1960 and 1971 Katalin Benkő was a kayaker of Vasas Izzó. In 1964 and 1966 Benkő was the Hungarian champion in the individual 500m kayak, and the 3000m in 1965. Between 1962 and 1966 she won another ten Hungarian championships in team events, with her being named as the female kayaker of the year in Hungary in 1964.

Benkő was a member of the Hungarian national team between 1963 and 1968. At the 1964 Tokyo Olympics she finished seventh along with Mária Róka in the K-2 500 meters. She achieved her greatest success in the same discipline, now with Anna Pfeffer, at the 1966 World Championships in Berlin, when their pair won the bronze medal. In 1969 she obtained a coaching certificate.
