Ray Bourque got his start in hockey in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League from 1976 through 1979, playing with the Trois-Rivières Draveurs and the Sorel (later Verdun) Éperviers. He was selected by the Boston Bruins in the 1979 National Hockey League draft and remained with them through almost his entire career, spending only part of the 1999-2000 season and the entire 2000-01 season with the Colorado Avalanche. During his tenure with the Bruins, he won the James Norris Memorial Trophy as top defenceman five times (1987, 1988, 1990, 1991, and 1994) and the Calder Memorial Trophy as rookie of the year in 1980, although his only Stanley Cup came with the Avalanche in 2001.
Bourque also represented Canada internationally, most notably at the 1998 Nagano Olympics, where his nation lost the bronze medal match to Finland. After his playing career ended, his jersey was retired by both of his NHL teams, and he was awarded the Lester Patrick Trophy for his contributions to ice hockey in the United States in 2003. The following year, he was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame.
