As an amateur boxer, Harold Stewart was Montreal city champion before twice becoming the Canadian national champion. He began his career as a lightweight but, in 1928, was selected to represent Canada in the featherweight division at that year’s Summer Olympics. He withdrew, however, as he was suffering from “cauliflower ear” and reserve Fred Volkert, who was normally a lightweight boxer, fought in his place. After attempting unsuccessfully to make the 1932 team at the national championships, Stewart turned professional and had a successful, if uninteresting, five-year career. He retired with a 15-4-3 record, but without having ever contended for a major title.
