Ireland’s John Maguire was a member of the Cambridgeport Gymnasium in Massachusetts. He represented them in the early days of the Boston Marathon, finishing fourth in both 1899 and 1900. When he occupied fourth place in the latter of those years, he was the first non-Canadian over the line behind Fred Hughson, Billy Sherring, and the winner, Jack Caffery. It was the first Boston Marathon run in under 2:40, and Maguire ran a personal best 2:51.36. Maguire was entered for the 1900 Olympic marathon in Paris but did not start the race.
