Biography

Travis Mayer grew up skiing in western New York at Holiday Valley Ski Area. In high school, he moved to Killington Mountain School in Vermont to concentrate on skiing, making the US Ski Team when he was 16. He also attended Whiteman School in Steamboat Springs, Colorado, after his parents bought a retirement home there. His silver medal at the 2002 Salt Lake City Olympics was somewhat of a surprise, as Mayer had only been on the US “C” team a few months before the Winter Olympics, but improved quickly to make the Olympic team. He won his first World Cup event in 2005 at Lake Placid’s Whiteface Mountain. During his career, he attended Cornell University on breaks from the ski circuit.
