Lindsay Gauld

All-round Canadian athlete Lindsay Gauld first made a name for himself as a road cyclist, making the Canadian Olympic team for the 1972 Games in München. Gauld competed at the elite level for 15 years before he retired, but he later returned to the sport to compete in mountain biking, winning the Canadian masters titles in 1993 and 1994. As well as cycling, Gauld was also active in cross-country skiing, with him running his own cycle and ski store in Winnipeg.

In 2012 Gauld took part in the annual Iditarod Trail Adventure, a winter bike race running across more than 550 kilometres in Alaska. After dropping out of the race due to severe frostbite, he returned the following year to complete the course in just over four-and-half-days. That same year he rode his millionth kilometre on his bike, an event that was celebrated in Winnipeg. In 1997 Gauld was inducted into the Manitoba Sports Hall of Fame, and he was honoured with a Lifetime Achievement award from the Manitoba Cycling Association in 2017.
