Latvian slalom canoeist Biruta Hercova-Hercberga was a 16-time champion of the Latvian SSR and a 36-time USSR champion. At the 1971 World Championships Hercova-Hercberga finished in 22nd before finishing 19th in the kayak singles event at the 1972 München Olympics. She graduated from the Faculty of Automation and Computer Technology of the Rīga Polytechnic Institute and went on to work in the field of scientific research.
