A member of the Sydney Rowing Club, Vic Middleton had a brief but busy rowing career in the early 1950s. In 1950, he won the Interstate Championships in the eights and was then selected as reserve with the Australian crew that went to that year’s British Empire Games. There, the team won the gold medal, although Middleton did not participate. He defended his Interstate title the following year and came second in 1952. Nonetheless, he was selected to represent his country in the coxless pairs at the 1952 Helsinki Olympics where, alongside Don Palmer, he was eliminated in the semi-finals repêchage. That year, he was also runner up in the Grand Challenge Cup at the Henley Royal Regatta, before retiring from active competition.
