Robert Mitchell raced flatwater kayaks. After studying at the Culver Military Academy, he attended Georgia Tech, graduating with an engineering degree in 1971. While at Georgia Tech Mitchell competed on the gymnastics team. At the time of the 1972 Olympics he was a US Navy Officer stationed at San Diego Naval Training Center. He also competed at the 1970 World Championships.
