In the 1990s Spanish politician Javier Gómez-Navarro served as the Minister of Trade and Tourism and was a Vice-President of the Organizing Committee of the 1992 Barcelona Olympics. Gómez-Navarro graduated from the Higher Technical School of Industrial Engineers of Madrid where he studied both industrial engineering and economic sciences. From 1978 to 1982 he was an editor of Viajar, Spain’s first travel magazine, before helping to restructure the company. He first served as the Secretary of State for Sports from 1987 to 1993, before moving to the Ministry of Commerce and Tourism. With his knowledge of sport and tourism he worked with the private sector to help transform sports clubs into limited companies. For his work in helping to stage to Barcelona Games Gómez-Navarro was awarded with the Olympic Order in Gold in 1992.
